Eat Your Vegetables

A group of elementary students putting on a play for class dressed as vegetables.

Hudson Hospital generously funded a Hudson Action Book Club Little Free Library for each elementary school. Hudson School District Destination Imagination leader, Liz Malanaphy, started a book club at each building to dig into a health issue of the club’s choice.  At Houlton Elementary School, the club of 5 chose to read about healthy eating choices, and as their end project, decided to create a play to share with younger students at the school.  After 5 weeks of reading, meeting after school, planning, and practicing, the group of 3rd and 4th graders shared their play called “Eat Your Vegetables”2020欧洲杯体育足球即时比分 with 3 grade classes .  This club provided a great opportunity to bring together kids from different grades and different classrooms to work on a common project. This was a great way for students to learn about a health topic of their choice, and for them to take action and share their learning with others.

The Hudson School District believes that building a community-wide response to mental health awareness and services is critical in supporting our children. The School District has created the Mental Health Advisory Council consisting of staff, students, parents, and community members. The purpose of the Advisory is to discuss issues and barriers but most importantly, to develop goals to increase collaboration to better meet the needs of all our community members.

The Mental Health Advisory Council will seek different view points, gather meaningful input, and encourage solutions to address identified mental health issues within the Hudson School District.

Houlton Performs Wizard of OZ

Houlton elementary students performing a scene from the Wizard of Oz; including Dorothy, Toto, Scarecrow, Tinman, and Lion

Over 60 students spent the last week of March rehearsing and preparing their production of the Wizard of Oz with the help of Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre.  Students began the week with auditions and over the next five (5) days, learned all their music, lines and dance moves. From start to finish, they had just five (5) days to get the show perfect and it all culminated with two performances on Friday, March 29.  The Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre (Barrett, MN) production was sponsored by the Houlton Parent Association.  Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre provided two actors who worked with the students for the week to produce the show. The professional actors directed the show, guided the backstage crew and performed at the Wicked Witch and Scarecrow. The students had a great experience over the week of rehearsals and performances and the show was enjoyed by all who attended.
